Terraforming the Sahara

Introduction * Sunlight * Water * Energy * Habitats * Discussion

Water

Because this is a desert, water will be valuable. You'll have a water budget, which will take in account the acquisition and loss of water in its various forms. Ground water will be a rare commodity, and imported fresh water will be difficult to come by.

Gaining and Losing Water via the Air

Nets may be useful in collecting moisture from the air, even while plants and other activities are leaking it to the atmosphere.

Access to Sea Water

Clever schemes for importing, processing, and re-exporting sea water may improve the water outlook. Looks like powered Reverse Osmosis plants may make more sense than liberal use of evaporative methods for actually creating fresh water from sea water.

Ruthless Recycling

Water will need to be ruthlessly recycled. See Singapore's NeWater project. Treated wastewater.
