The more grandiose notion of huge domes has not come to pass as of yet. The largest domes yet created are for sports stadiums, and suffer in their own ways from internal weather and structural creation. Staying close to the ground with inexpensive plastic, metal, and silicate construction materials makes for easier initial creation and later re-construction should the structures suffer external damage. It is the practical technologies of inexpensive greenhouses and other sealed or semi-sealed environments that is called for.
