Biospheres, Controlled Ecosystems, and Life Support Systems
As mankind moves out into the wilds of Space, long-term
self-sufficient ecosystems become very important. Here are
various links I've found on the Web related to this topic.
Biosphere II in Arizona (funded by billionaire Ed Bass)
CELSS - Controlled Ecological Life Support Systems
Engineered Closed/Controlled EcoSystem (ECCES)
Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS)
Note that different groups within NASA use CELSS and ECLSS.
Question is, do they mean the same thing? I get the sense that
ECLSS is used for the brute force approach currently used, whereas
CELSS is used for the more agricultural approach.
Mesocosm - Simulations of Aquatic Ecosystems
Life Support Technology
Hydroponics
Air Quality Monitoring
